I'm running out of breath. This was the first time I attended ALL the shows for Philippine Fashion Week, and I have to say that it's one crazy ride! I've learned so much more about fashion this week than I ever did in my entire life.

I used to be so afraid to talk about which designs I loved and didn't. This was because the fashion world is so tricky, and if I judged based on my aesthetic (that then knew nothing about the craft of fashion) I feel like I might be given the eye-roll or the SMH by those who matter. But my work requires me to be vocal about my thoughts, and I then realize that the criteria is plain simple:

Pac and LGBT Rights

According to a recent news story, pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao (who found himself in hot water after allegedly stating the bible quote Leviticus 20:13 on an interview with blogger Granville Ampong on Examiner.com whilst discussing the boxer's opposition to Barack Obama's support of gay marriage) now claims that the issue was a bad case of misquotation.

The quote reads:

“If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

The blogger (Ampong) placed this biblical passage right in the center of Manny's statements, appearing to be the boxer's sentiments to promote violence to the gay community. In a second blog entry, Ampong said people who thought that it was Manny who stated the quote failed to understand what was written.

Regardless of whether people believe the claims or not, the problem is not in Pacquiao's opposition stand but in the passage itself. Are Bible quotes legitimate proof of an act's morality (or lack thereof)? What about those that aren't Christian? Would their dissidence in the Bible make them wrong or even less human?

Separation of Church and State. How thin is the line? Admittedly, not everyone in the state is a saint and not everyone who leads and follows the Church is easily agreeable (or benevolent). This fact makes it difficult for anyone to completely agree with broadening the gap between the two. With the Philippines being the only Catholic country in Asia, some people believe that the Church has to be "hands-on" when it comes to government decision-making... or governing, in general.

Respect means something more than being passive about others' opinions and beliefs, although the "It's my opinion. Get over it!" thinking is how a lot of people define the vague term. Respect should also never be confused with tolerance.

Each celebrity or personality's opinions regarding the gay community is subject to either be praised by human right advocates and shared as "inspiration" among thousands of people who claim to believe in the same principles or frowned upon and bashed in fury by the same thousands.

The opposite of respect is not by just disagreeing. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and to live by the principles that he or she believes in. Contempt is the opposite of respect. It is the mix of two primary emotions disgust and anger. What has anyone of the minority done to you to cause you such contempt? To support violence and angst against people who differ from your principles just as immoral as your claims. And that goes for everyone, not just for the anti-gay community.

The Bible serves as good guidance and its purpose to everyone is different, but to come to a universal understanding is crucial to interpretation. According to Scripture, the Bible does have many purposes. It is “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Others will say that the Bible may be outdated while others rebut and believe that the words and teachings are timeless. The Bible was written by man on how they interpreted the movements and Word of the Lord.

To deny people of genuine love is horrible. Everyone should know the importance of respect, not just those who oppose. My position in this issue to respect and understand, to know your limits and your place. I would wish to come up with a separate book that does exactly this, but just as it is hard to pass a bill to make a law, we're going to be lucky if we have everyone agree to at least a sentence.

The lack of answers to my questions only prove how some people are unreasonable without careful thought. Case in point, people rallying against Gaga's Manila concert. If you've got answers, by all means, please enlighten us.

Dress to impress: Make the most of summer party season!

Summer is a season of long hot evenings, warm lazy days and cool summer parties. When the weather turns out nice, it seems that everyone decides they want to have a celebration. And why not? We all work hard throughout the year and deserve a party or two. Besides, we get so little good weather in the UK that we should definitely make the most of it when it arrives!

Summer is also wedding season. Across the country, thousands of people will be getting married every weekend. You’ll barely be able to pass a church, on any given Saturday, without there being a wedding.

With this combination, it’s pretty likely that you’re going to get invited to at least one or two big events. All of which means that you’ll need to have your outfits planned and prepared, well in advance. This summer it’s all about colours – big, bold and bright. Patterns are also on trend, with animal skin being a particularly hot look.

Right outfit for the right occasion

How you dress will depend on the nature of your party. If it’s a BBQ with friends, anything from a maxi dress to jeans and a T-shirt will work well. The summer should be casual and comfortable. But if it’s a summer ball or a wedding, you’re going to need something a little bit more formal. Look into getting a couple of occasion dresses for those special days. You don’t want to be caught wearing the same dress on two occasions, and it’s nice to treat yourself to more than one option.

Accessories are key

Summer is also the season to experiment with accessories. Hats, sunglasses and bags will all add colour and flair to what you’re wearing. The right accessories will transform a casual dress into a formal one, giving you two outfits for the price of one.

With the weather forecasters telling us that this summer is going to be a good one, it’s a great excuse to enjoy yourself and make the most of summer parties. So, start doing your homework now, and by the time party season comes around, you’ll definitely be dressed to impress.

Today, I'm celebrating my 4th month in the fashion magazine industry. It's been quite a roller coaster ride.

We get to express ourselves here. I've learned that fashion is ironic, too. How rules are made and bent (and even broken) adds to the oddity of fashion! It makes so much sense and no sense at the same time, like how I dress compares to how you dress. It is an art mastered by the open-minded, without rules but with a formula.

Sometimes work is fun. Wait. No. Work should be fun. WORK SHOULD BE PLAY. And most of the time, that's what we do. We play.

We dress up, do each others nails, chat, have loads of coffee (or ako lang ata yun) and milk tea, take photos, go to events, write stories, and so much more.

To the people who ask me how working here is like, here's what I always say:

Working here (or probably for any fashion magazine) really gets as crazy as the fashion we love. It's such a guilty pleasure, though. It's just as cut-throat as any other job, with stress and drama... maybe even more cause we're all girls! It gets so silly, physically draining. But at the end of the day, the feeling is great, and like a trend... there's always something exciting.

Event: MEGA 20 Most Stylish

I was having second thoughts about putting this post up. I was assigned to write about this occasion for our upcoming issue so I was afraid that if I did, I'd have no words left for my article.

Then again, I can never start my article with that anecdote.

And I can never say "I".

I was tense.

Past tense, present tense, future tense.

Earlier that day, I had to catch up on rest. Then by the afternoon, I ran to Dusit Hotel for a supposed shoot with a secret someone and later realized that I was in the wrong hotel all along. *facepalm*

After that hullabaloo, I had to pull out a dress at the very last minute cause I was totally ready for everything else but my attire. Thank you very much Ulysses King and to the ladies of Vatican, Podium for helping me out. I went absolutely crazy.

Sleek and super dark. Let's just say "mysterious" was the peg?

The event was held at e's Bar, Edsa Shangri-La.

I met with blogger icons Elisa Aquino, Cheys Pedegrosa, Kaye Awatin, Mariel Wagas, and Stephanie Dy! I felt a little bad that Ava didn't get to join us.

Hello BFF Elisa, lunch date and shoot, yes? :)

I'd consider running around in heels a legit workout. I ran everywhere. With poise.

This ~~was~~ is the MOST STYLISH event of the year. With style icons, fashionistas, and taste-makers in one place, I couldn't help but ogle (ogle, talaga ang term!) and take down mental fashion notes from everyone. My favorite dress for the evening would have to be Miriam Quiambao's illusion dress from Mango! Talk about flattering silhouette!!

Tita Renee Salud was also at the event. His long royal blue fringed mullet gown was the first designer clothing that I have ever worn. He's quite close to the family.

*cue flashbacks of 18th birthday*

LOOOOL. Okay forget you ever saw that.

Going back, I had the greatest pleasure of getting to chat and meet the women on the list. (See what the 20 Most Stylish wore during the event here). Had to also restrain myself from fangirling... most of the time. *cough* Daniel Matsunaga & Vanessa Matsunaga *cough*

Private Party: Republ1c Wake Park - Nuvali

Cool person alert!

Last Saturday, after checking out the waves at Outbreak Manila (Nuvali Leg), I went over to the REPUBL1C Wake Park, a little farther from Solenad (and most of civilization) to catch some real waves. Bet you've never been here, kids!

Okay so I'm not that cool. I didn't know how to wake board... yet.

Nuvali's Wake Park was way too cool. The CWC (Camsur Watersports Complex) feel with out actually going as far as Camsur! This wake park is owned by the same person that brought us CWC, Gov LRay Villafuerte.

The summer heat that day tempted me to try it out for myself, but i was afraid I didn't have the right gear (literally and figuratively). I love water sports though, swimming is after all my first and best sport.

Myself and some new found friends at the wake park. Hello Jacob!

I was invited by Jacob whose group is into this sport. Right now, the Nuvali Wake Park is strictly for INVITED guests only, and is set to open in around two months. Prepare your physique (and wallets) for that.

Wakeboarding looks like such a thrilling (and too cool for school) sport. Maybe that's why it's been all the craze! Laguna will NEVER be the same when this park opens. I better prepare myself for a social network feed of "BRB Gonna go wakeboarding!" status and profile photos of girls and guys flaunting their REPUBL1C, Quicksilver, Roxy or whathaveyou get-up. This is a sport I'm definitely trying out. Time to get toned and update myself on the cool people's chill summer playlist.

Nothing much going on today. I've probably had the best sleep this week! Now I'm super ready for the following months. Working on this event coming up and I can't wait for it to be finally over.

I'm still craving for some Moniegold and Oishi Potato Fries (Cheese Flavor) and I'm in such terrible shape. I'm finally pursuing my decision to get back into sports. I'll just have to let go of some of my part time agendas. I really hate being called skinny. I think the past has tainted my perception of being thin and have triggered it to be such a negative thing for me. A few years back, my weight was something I COULD NOT control, and I went through a lot of "ANG PAYAT MO. You're too thin, kumain ka!" and a lot of "You could probably be blown away by the wind" and several other insults. As much as other girls would love to be in the shape I am in now, it's not something I wish to have. I want the meat, and the curves, and the weight! I cringe when someone calls me "thin". CRINGE.

Exercise, here I come.

Have you ever been tired?

I don't know, maybe it's my reaction to being absolutely tired. Physically, mentally, and emotionally tired of everything that and anyone who has ever let me down and said that I wasn't worth it. I'm also tired of the straining commute, the constant pressure, and the headaches I get from God knows where.

Have you ever been tired?

Tired that you feel like you've lost all hope and you know you're on the brink of giving up. Where the only place safe is in the chambers of your mind and the only thing that understands is your heart trying to tell you it's okay. It's okay. It's going to be fine.

Sometimes, it's not.

I can't always be what other people expect me to be, and that's alright by me but was never alright with you. You have taught me to do the impossible: to be afraid of shedding my own tears because you say it makes me weak, to be scared of exploring the world alone because you say it makes me selfish and/or a loner. There's a difference between being alone and being lonely. I am not the latter, but you always try to make it appear as if those two things are one and the same.

Just because you can't understand something, it doesn't mean it's wrong.

God, please give me the strength to keep going.

Got invited to a beautiful press launch at Gaudi Restaurant in Serendra, Taguig.

There I met the wonderful Tara Cabullo of Chronicles of Vanity! Event: MEGA YDC Finale x 20th Anniversary

MEGA celebrated it's 20th Anniversary and the Young Designer's Competition Grand Finale last February 16, 2012 at the NBC Tent! This was my first event for MEGA, I was so excited! Here are the promised event photos. I swear it was the 2nd most gorgeous event I've ever been to (the Tabuena♥Ponce-Enrile Nuptials being first). Man, I used to think my 18th birthday celebration was great. Now it's not even on my "Best Events EVER" list anymore. Hahaha.

My Greatness Started at Home

My parents always tell me that everything starts at home. And true enough, everything that makes me who I am today started from home.

My greatest achievement would be who I have become overall. My home has nurtured and shaped my values, ideals, beliefs, and the skills that make me who I am today.

I belong in a family of seven, myself being the eldest among the five siblings. At a young age, I was given various responsibilities and chores. Like all panganays, much was expected of me.

My family

My parents are responsible for all my achievements. They put me in school at very young age and, because of their support and guidance, I was able to be accelerated. I was in a class with kids far older than I was, and because of this (plus the responsibilities of being the eldest) I was encouraged to act and think maturely.

2011 Graduation

I graduated last year with a Bachelor of Arts - Communication Arts degree. During my college days, I would hurry home after school (or during break time, since school was just 5 minutes away) and get on the computer. Our course was very theoretical, and didn't divulge much on the various modes of digital art. But my fascination with multimedia encouraged me to learn about the software that I would spend hours reading tutorials, watching how-to videos, and browsing for inspiration on the web.

My hobby grew into curiosity of web design and coding and I was so addicted to learning! By my second year, I could write HTML and CSS codes, create quality graphics and photos, and edit my own videos. I would do all that, balance my studies, and engage extracurricular activities with the Student Council and the College Publication.

My parents have always been supportive of me and my hobbies. Because of the skills I have honed at home, I got to score various rackets as a one-woman ad agency at the age of 18. Brainstorming, conceptualizing, branding, creating studies, negotiating with clients and suppliers, designing, and producing... I worked hard for everything I have now. My first SLR, my clothes, and my gadgets. I would also give back to the family, treating them out or buying groceries on days when I'd have more than I need.

At 18, I've also managed to land my first job as a Marketing Associate at a record label in Makati. On weekends, I would be out and about doing part time work as a graphic designer, event and fashion photographer, writer, model, and web developer.

20 years old and a Senior Marketing Associate for a prestigious magazine publication, I've gone a long way from the days when I'd just be "the geek that knew how to do almost anything". I'm also currently working on setting up my own design firm called Deviant Manila, and saving up for my Master's Degree. My parents have set the bar high and have inspired me to always do my best. They have created a great environment at home for me to grow and practice my first steps. To be able to provide for my family and myself at a young age while still being able to do the things I'm passionate about is my measure of success and greatness!

The family bond, the encouragement and support, and of course the access to knowledge and ideas from HOME have shaped me and made me into something I am proud of.

The Changing Times

I'm back to straight hair!

My hair hasn't been in the best shape lately. I kept putting my hair in a bun because of the bad body it had. I would always tell myself that I should try ironing it once in a while, but waking up earlier than the time I get up now (I get up around 5 am because of the LAGUNA - ORTIGAS commute) is such a hassle!

After being assured of healthy hair when I had it 'micro-checked' in a Kerastase event last week, I decided to put my locks under the arms of chemicals again and get a semi-rebond at Justine Barbara Salon. CHECK!

To make sure I don't damage my hair, I use Kérastase's latest product Fibre Architecte Complexe Ciment-Cylane Double Serum (woah, that's a mouthful!). It renovates the locks and resists hair erosion. I'm probably over-exaggerating because using the serum is only for Erosion Level 3 to 4, but it's better safe than sorry! You can get your hair erosion level checked at any Kérastase Salon.

On another note, I got a BlackBerry! I downloaded this ELLE France app last night and found really nice pictures. Now if I only knew how to read French! I'm only figuring out what it means based on the little English it contains. I should probably tell MEGA to do something like this. Having style tips on the go is pretty handy!
